Myanmar and China: MTW Issues Two Minuteman Appeals

Two devastating disasters recently occurred in the world, merely days apart. The tropical cyclone Nargis devastated the southeastern portion of Myanmar on May 3, and a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck China near Chengdu on May 12. To date, the death toll estimate for China stands at 68,000, and Myanmar estimates reach as high as 100,000. Millions in both areas are homeless and the potential for greater loss rises with each passing day. In an unprecedented opportunity to serve, Mission To The World (MTW) has responded to these tragedies by issuing back-to-back Minuteman appeals.

“There are many NGOs [non-governmental organizations] on the ground to help in these two countries,” said Doug Mallow, director of MTW’s Disaster Relief Department. “But what MTW offers is unique—having a ministry of presence and developing personal relationships while offering helping hands and a cup of cold water."

MTW is sending assessment teams to both areas followed by specially trained disaster response teams. In addition to bringing physical relief and spiritual encouragement, these teams desire to support Myanmar and Chinese nationals by building relationships and trust.

"In a sense, what we're doing is a drop in the bucket," said Mallow. "But each person touched is a human being of value. We have a unique opportunity to speak into their lives in this moment of crisis and communicate Christ's love."
